The allure of striping a golf ball out of a fairway bunker one minute and then lounging beachside with toes curled in sand and cold beverage in hand the next, has been a magnet pulling golfers to South Carolina’s stretch of sea islands for decades.

Fripp Island Resort’s two golf courses – Ocean Point and Ocean Creek – opened 30 years apart. I was drawn to the island mainly to evaluate the renovation of the former, a George Cobb design that opened in 1964 at the height of golf’s Midcentury-Modern phase.

There are many reasons to fall in love with a particular beach. It could be a haven for shell-seekers. Or the perfect place to catch some waves. Maybe the sand feels extra soft between your toes. Or it could be one of the prettiest spots you've ever laid eyes on, like this collection of beaches.
