What makes a great wreath?
Some like a classic and traditional style - both foliage and colour.
Classic (imho) implies traditional berried holly and a red or gold ribbon.
These days there are so many styles and colours to consider: from a Scandi shaker style to a bejewelled orange and cinnamon design shown here - truth is there’s no right or wrong. You do you!
I like to offer variety and encourage free expression & individuality in my workshops so offer a huge selection of foliages, decorations and ribbons.
Do consider these points ahead of making your wreath:
1. Your door: is it under a porch or is it exposed?
Is it inside (a centrally heated) apartment block?
Frost, rain and central heating can impact its longevity. If you use Spanish moss (which I do) rain may turn it brown, likewise frost can affect the fruit if it gets wet it may go mouldy. Dry heat from inside a building will definitely dehydrate your wreath so choose contents with care and spritz it with water regularly.
Generally at this time of year the cold & damp atmosphere means the wreath will last really well for 4 + weeks hanging outside, thus seeing you through to new year.
2. Consider your house or apartment style? Is it modern or a period property ? This may affect your decision to make a more traditional wreath or something more funky or contemporary.
3. Colour of your door? I think this is a REALLY important because if it’s dark (green or black), perhaps consider using variegated foliages and lighter decorative details to visually ‘lift’ it away from the dark background. Some colours really show off a wreath, a yellow door would look great with a grey foliage such as eucalyptus and scenecio for example. A good florist or wreath maker will advise if you’re not sure.
This wreath: the accent colour is what I call ‘CDM Purple’ (Cadbury Dairy Milk)! a festive colour which contrasts well with orange and cinnamon against the grey/green foliage. I also used dried flowers to add another colour /textured accent, in this instance purple limonium.
Any questions for my upcoming posts ask below!

Winter weddings.
With three weddings still to go before Christmas, I wanted to shine a light on winter weddings and consider the use of colour or not as the case may be..
As a florist who is not afraid to use bold colours in my work, I’m also sympathetic towards those who don’t. We often associate winter as a time devoid of colour and as an antidote want to inject warmth by adding in deeper or vibrant colours.
Whilst this is undoubtedly effective it’s also worth considering incorporating candle light and touches of colour in the form of the colour of the candle wax - taper candles for example are an excellent way to inject a touch of colour and a warmth with a twinkle of light too. You can also swap out an all white floral palette which can often feel cold with more muted hues as shown in this late November bridal bouquet. Warmer nude roses, budded wax flower and shades of grey nestled with ivory majolica spray roses created a warmer more interesting combination. The miscellany of wintry elements add interest and texture in lieu of a pure white monotone which risks being dare I say, cold and dull!
The mix of foliage, berries, succulents and fluffy clematis seed heads (otherwise known as old man’s beard) created texture to this pretty bridal hand tied bouquet.
Tomorrow I’ll share some colour inspiration for winter weddings.

January has me thinking of Spring and all the pretty flowers! 🌸🌹 London has some beautiful florist shops, here are some favourites:
.
🌿 Petals at Bibendum, Kensington, the prettiest flower stall, and such a great selection of blooms!
🌿 Moyses Stevens, with several shops, including Belgravia, and Chelsea, they stock beautiful bouquets
🌿 Neill Strain, Belgravia, luxurious floral arrangements which make the perfect gift
🌿 Bramble & Moss, Richmond, so lovely with that original shopfront and its curved window and floor tiles

I’ve been on zoom calls these past few days, here in Copenhagen, there’s been new clients and booked clients having up dates and run through calls ahead of their wedding day. All the flowers, the venues, the details.. I love it most of all when clients say my favourite three words:
I trust you
Trust is absolutely fundamental to my job, it’s essential for them to get the best out of me, for me to pull their flower palette together, to create memorable scenes like this beautiful May wedding before Covid. Now that those days of cancellations and rescheduling have been consigned to history I feel a new beginning this season.
So I’m off to write flower lists and plan up coming scheduled wedding flower palettes, checking my props and the details are all up to date, on order or in my sight line to deal with.
This May wedding came together off the back of trust, people ask if I have a vision when I create floral scenes like this but the truth is, no! I will have an outline but beyond this sketchy outline, I prefer to watch the ingredients come together on the day.
Flowers largely from Polly bayntunflowers helped this glorious wedding come to life..
